A volunteer project, a huge codebase
Origins is built in our spare time. We had to restore dozens of plugins written almost ten years ago, get them running on today's machines, then build the website and tools around them. Without help, it would have taken years.
What AI brings to the code
- Getting the old games running again. Adapting the original code so it works today, while keeping the original gameplay as much as possible.
- Opening the server to more players. Recent Java and Bedrock versions can connect, not just the old version of the game.
- Finding bugs and security holes. Reviewing every mini-game for errors, possible cheats and security issues, on the server as well as the website.
- Optimising. Making the server lighter so it uses fewer resources and stays smooth, and speeding up the website.
- Testing. Automated checks run on every change so we don't break what already worked.
All of this work is reviewed, tested and approved by us before it reaches the game.
What doesn't come from AI
- The original mini-game code, released by the SamaGames team under the GPL licence: it's the foundation of everything.
- The maps, taken from the original archives with their credits.
- The historical logos and pixel art, which haven't been redrawn.
- The project's choices: which games, when to open, how to keep the community alive.
What AI doesn't do on Origins
There's no chatbot on the website. No AI moderates players or decides on a sanction. Your usernames, statistics and messages aren't sent to any AI service.
Who's responsible
We are. If a bug sticks around, we fix it: it's not "the AI's fault".
The original team
AI doesn't replace the work of the people who created SamaGames between 2014 and 2017. Without their code, their maps and their world, there would be nothing to rebuild.
