Getting started in UHC and UHC Run

Rules, tips and good habits to survive your first UHC and UHC Run matches.

How UHC works

UHC stands for "Ultra Hardcore". The rule that changes everything: health doesn't regenerate naturally, even with a full hunger bar. To heal, you need other sources, such as golden apples or some potions. Every heart you lose counts, so caution pays off.

The mode relies on a game rule Minecraft itself provides: natural regeneration can be turned off for a world (game rules, Minecraft Wiki).

UHC or UHC Run

Classic UHC leaves time to explore, mine and gear up before the fights. UHC Run speeds everything up: a short preparation phase, then everyone meets in the centre of the map. On Origins, the mode gives you 20 minutes to gear up before everyone regroups in the centre. Durations, teams and bonuses vary between servers: read the rules of the mode you pick rather than relying on an old video.

While you wait

Check your team if there is one and look at the scoreboard: number of players, start time, announced stages. The waiting area isn't the survival map, which is prepared separately.

Making the most of preparation

  • Start with food and stone tools, then iron.
  • Keep what you need to craft golden apples if the variant allows them: they're often your main source of healing.
  • Avoid falls and lava; no pointless risks without regeneration.
  • In a team, split tasks and set a meeting point.

When the fighting starts

Watch for phase changes and the limits of the play area. A safe position and short messages help you decide quickly. If you're eliminated, follow the spectator rules: no passing information to your team if that's not allowed.

After your first match

Pick one thing to improve: gear, movement or teamwork. Little by little, the reflexes come.
