Installing mods with Fabric

A complete, simple and up-to-date guide to installing Fabric and your first mods on Minecraft Java, without mixing up versions.

Before you start

Fabric is a mod loader for Minecraft Java. It doesn't exist on Bedrock, where add-ons are installed differently. For each mod, find three things: the Minecraft version it targets, the loader it needs (Fabric, not Forge) and its dependencies. A mod made for Forge won't work with Fabric.

Back up your worlds

Before touching an existing world, make a copy: Singleplayer, select the world, Edit, then Make Backup. Keep that archive somewhere safe.

Installing Fabric

  • Close the game and the launcher.
  • Download the Fabric Installer from the official Fabric website.
  • Run it, choose a Minecraft version compatible with your mods and install the Fabric profile.
  • Open the official launcher: a Fabric profile is now available.

Adding your mods

  • Only download mods from their official page or well-known platforms such as Modrinth and CurseForge.
  • Add the required dependencies. Many Fabric mods need Fabric API, which installs like a mod.
  • Put the files in the mods folder of the profile you use.
  • Launch the Fabric profile and test in a new world.

If the game won't start

Compare the versions of Minecraft, Fabric and each mod. Read the first useful error in the report rather than adding files at random. Don't panic: remove mods one by one, or go back to a profile without mods, to find the cause.

A few precautions

A server may forbid some mods or require the same content on the server side. If you remove a mod that added blocks or items, avoid saving over your only world: those elements could disappear. Keep the original copy so you can roll back.

In short, one version at a time, and always a backup at hand.
