Getting started with redstone

A lever, some redstone dust and a lamp: the basics for building your first mechanisms, step by step.

What you need

For this first circuit, in Java or Bedrock, switch to Creative mode so you have everything at hand:

  • a lever;
  • redstone dust;
  • a redstone lamp;
  • a few solid blocks, stone for example.

The exercise shows how a signal travels. It doesn't depend on any edition-specific mechanism.

Building the circuit step by step

  • Place a row of five solid blocks on the ground, in a straight line.
  • Put the lever on the first block.
  • Lay redstone dust on the next three blocks: it forms a continuous wire.
  • Place the redstone lamp on the last block, right at the end of the wire.
  • Flip the lever.

What you should see

With the lever on, the redstone wire lights up and the lamp turns on. Switch the lever off: the wire darkens and the lamp goes out. To really understand continuity, break one piece of the wire: the lamp stays off. Put it back, and everything works again.

If the lamp stays off

  • Move the lamp so it directly touches the end of the wire.
  • Check every joint: two pieces of dust next to each other aren't always connected.
  • Stay in a straight line, with no slopes or crossings, for this first test.

Going a bit further

A redstone signal travels up to 15 blocks of wire (Redstone Dust, Minecraft Wiki). Beyond that, a repeater can extend and delay the signal, but there's no point adding one before you understand this short circuit. Little by little, you'll be able to swap the lamp for a door or a piston. Careful: some advanced builds, pistons in particular, behave differently between Java and Bedrock. Pick tutorials that state their edition.

To store your blocks and components, the guide to organising your base's chests can help.
